Each and every one of us is unique, but many of us have shared experiences. Your story—the experiences you’ve had—will help connect you with your “tribe.”
Those life struggles you’ve faced are the same ones challenging your audience right now. Those business disasters you’ve overcome are similar to the difficulties your clients are working through.
Think about it this way: Who is better able to help a single mom improve the health of her child than another single mom? Who knows better the difficulties of eating on a budget than someone who lost everything and was forced to start over?
Even more important, these “character building” setbacks are the perfect inspiration for your products and programs. By keeping in mind that others have shared your same difficulties, it’s easy to design products that solve the exact problems your ideal client is facing, and to present them to her at just the right point in her journey.
Step 1: Define Your ideal clients' pain point
Use your experiences and story and what you know about your ideal client to brainstorm at least 20 problems she will face at some point in her business or life.
These don’t have to be huge, life-altering problems. In fact, it’s best if you have a good mix of small issues (these become opt-in gifts and other low-cost offers) and catastrophic dilemmas (these are your high-ticket coaching programs).
Think of the problems in terms of the big issues, as well as the symptoms she’s experiencing.
Make this list of at least 20 issues your ideal client is facing. This is the foundation of your message and offers.
Step 2: Consider Your Solutions
How can you help your ideal client overcome each of the problems you listed in Step 1? Take the list of 20 problems and write down a potential way to address each one of them.
For example: if your ideal client is struggling with weight, your solution might be quitting sugar. Or if your ideal client struggles with bloating, your solution might be addressing gut health.
These solutions will help you create offers that your ideal client will happily pay for! Because you’re addressing their pain and offering them a way to overcome it.

- Grab a notebook and number a page 1-20. Write down each of the pains, problems, or symptoms that your ideal client might deal with at some point in their life.
- Now write down a potential solution for each of those 20 pains, problems, or symptoms.
- Make columns on your paper with these headings: Freebies, Workshops, DIY, 1:1/Group. Now write your solutions (from Step 2) under the heading that would be most appropriate (see the examples above in Step 3 for inspiration).
